On Track

altOn Track

On Track is part of the West of Scotland Wider Access Forum and is designed to support students who intend to make the transition from study at college to degree-level study at university or other Higher Education Institution (HEI). The West Forum is made up of 21 of the colleges and 6 HEIs in the West of Scotland.

On Track offers a short pre-entry programme, delivered over two stages, which is designed to help students successfully make the transition from college to university. It also helps those students who are unsure about whether or not to take their studies further make an informed decision about whether degree-level study is right for them at this time.

Who is it for?

The On Track programme is for groups of students currently studying at college, usually Higher National Qualification students, who are considering progressing to degree-level study.

The programme is delivered over two stages, both of which consist of three 2-hour sessions.

Stage One is generic and is delivered between October - December, whereas Stage Two is subject specific and is delivered from January - June.

Stage One
Stage One is aimed at those students who are unsure about whether or not to take their studies further, or have already decided to go to university but would just like to find out more about what to expect when they get there. The topics covered in Stage One are:

  • Introduction to university
  • Introduction to university teaching methods
  • Decision making skills workshop

Stage Two
Stage Two is aimed at those students who have decided to progress to university upon completion of their college course and want to develop the required skills for successful degree-level study. This stage covers a range of subject-specific degree-level study skills, including:

  • Critical thinking:
  • Written assignments and essays;
  • Referencing; and
  • Exams and revision

Students will get the most out of On Track by participating in both stages of the programme. However, participation in both stages is not compulsory, and students may decide that they only wish to participate on one of the stages.
